Bamboo Sliver Calligraphy:Unique in the World
Wang Yuanhua, Host of the Five Tastes Study, has been standing out among Chinese calligraphic circles with his unique style----creating calligraphic works with bamboo slivers instead of traditional brushes.
Quite the quintessence of Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy boasts a lone history and appeals to all walks of life. Wang, born in 1950 and a native of Fuqing City, Fujian Province in southeast China, has been devoted to Chinese calligraphy since childhood. Learning from tradition and aiming at creation, Wang began to write bamboo sliver calligraphic works in 1990 and afterwards improved his “bamboo sliver pen ” by engraving whorls around it to enable it to hold more ink. After years of hard exploration, Wang’s bamboo sliver calligraphy, noted for integrating both the charm of traditional calligraphy written with “soft” brushes and the beauty of calligraphy produced by “hard” pens, was finally accepted as a valuable contribution to Chinese calligraphy.
The only bamboo sliver calligrapher in the world, Wang has won awards at many national and international shows or contests, gained great acclaim from artists at home and abroad and received wide press coverage. His work have been widely collected as priceless art works by galleries and people all over the world.
There is no end for Wang and his bamboo sliver calligraphy. He is still striving to push the horizons of Chinese calligraphy further away.
